SEBI Warns Investors About Invitation-Only WhatsApp Stock Tip Groups

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has issued a fresh caution to investors about stock tips and trading calls shared in invitation-only WhatsApp groups. The warning came in press release No. 65/2026, dated 22 October 2026. Every point below is taken from the press release, linked in the Sources section.

What SEBI said on 22 October 2026

According to SEBI, certain unregistered persons are offering stock tips and trading calls through WhatsApp groups that people can join only by invitation. SEBI calls these fraudulent groups. Their operators pose as market experts, mostly use overseas WhatsApp numbers, and share unauthorised buy and sell calls "in the name of free investor education".

How these groups make tips look genuine

SEBI says some members of these groups act in concert with the operators. They post false claims of profit and praise the so-called expert, so that newer members believe the calls are working. SEBI names this practice astroturfing: creating a false impression of genuine support to push unsuspecting investors into acting on the calls.

In plain terms, the profit screenshots and thank-you messages in such a group may be planted.

The "our old group was banned" message

SEBI also flagged what happens when such a group is shut down. When enforcement agencies or regulators act and a group is suspended, members usually get a message from a new number inviting them to a new group. SEBI quoted a typical example:

"Due to Social Media Platform's risk control measures, our previous group has been banned. This new group will provide daily recommendations of quality stock information and trading guidance. Please join the group."

SEBI asks investors to treat any message like this, one that says a group was suspended, closed or banned and invites them to a new one, as a red flag, and to exit such groups.

What SEBI advises investors to do

The press release lists five points. In summary, SEBI says investors should:

  • not join invitation-only WhatsApp groups run by unknown persons or by people claiming to be stock market experts, especially those using overseas numbers, and not act on tips shared there;

  • not be swayed by praise, profit claims or trade confirmations posted by other members, because these may be planted;

  • treat a "group was banned, join our new group" message as a red flag and leave the group;

  • not open an account on, or transfer money to, any trading platform or app suggested in such groups, and not share holdings or trading account details with such persons;

  • deal only with SEBI-registered intermediaries and use only authentic trading apps.

How to check a registration and a trading app

SEBI points investors to two official pages. The registration status of an entity can be checked on SEBI's intermediaries page. The trading apps of SEBI-registered intermediaries can be checked on SEBI's investor support page.

A simple habit helps. Before you act on any message about stocks, look up the name of the person or firm on SEBI's website, and install a trading app only after confirming that it belongs to a registered intermediary. Our guide on SEBI-registered vs unregistered advice explains these checks step by step.

Not the first social media warning this year

SEBI's press release No. 48/2026, dated 17 August 2026, cautioned investors about the display of live trading strategies on social media platforms.

FAQ

SEBI cautioned investors against stock tips and trading calls offered by unregistered persons through invitation-only WhatsApp groups. It said the operators pose as market experts, mostly use overseas numbers, and share unauthorised buy and sell calls in the name of free investor education.

SEBI uses the term for members who act in concert with the group's operator and post false profit claims and praise for the so-called expert. This creates a false impression of genuine support and pushes other members to act on the calls.

SEBI says to treat such a message as a red flag and exit the group. It also advises investors not to open an account on, or send money to, any trading platform or app suggested in such groups.

SEBI says the registration status of an entity can be verified on its intermediaries page at sebi.gov.in, and the trading apps of SEBI-registered intermediaries can be checked on its investor support page at investor.sebi.gov.in.
